A month ago I made the decision to leave a secure job of ten years to open a private counseling practice. The fears were present including where would I find an office and how could I get people to come there for counseling.
Everyone I spoke to had suggestions, encouragement, and warnings. Get on insurance panels or focus on self-pay clients. Do your speaking engagements for free so you can build up your clients or charge for you workshops and give them free books. Decide on a speciality but don't be so narrow that you can't get people.
The encouragement has been motivating. Many people do not take a leap of faith and regret it forever. Many people stay in deadend jobs never feeling good getting up and starting their day.
I feel wonderful and less stressed. I may not become famous, have millions of clients or sell bunches of books. But, at the end of the day if I have helped a caregiver find self-care tips, help someone grieving to smile through their tears as the share a story of love, or booked a workshop it will all be worth it.
Sometimes all it takes is someone to listen....really listen.
